US judge blocks Trump’s fast-track deportation policy

A US judge has ruled that the Trump administration cannot go ahead with a new policy that would allow it to quickly deport large numbers of migrants to countries other than their own  without giving them a chance to explain if they fear danger there. This decision was reported by Reuters.

The policy, introduced by the Trump administration, aimed to speed up the deportation process for migrants who already had final orders of removal. However, critics said it would deny people the chance to seek protection if they faced threats of torture, persecution, or even death in the country they might be sent to.

Judge Brian Murphy of the US District Court in Boston had already put a temporary block on the policy last month. On Friday, he issued a preliminary injunction, which means that block will stay in place while the court case continues.

As Reuters explains, the ruling makes it harder for the Trump administration to carry out rapid deportations, especially in cases where migrants may have legal rights not to be returned to their home countries.

The legal battle is expected to continue, but for now, the policy cannot be enforced.
