A quirky hack has been making rounds on social media: blowing sounds, blowing bubbles, or exhaling forcefully while on the toilet to relieve constipation. But does it work?

According to Dr Jayanta Thakuria, Director – Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospitals, Faridabad, this technique is rooted in engaging the diaphragm and abdominal muscles, which could stimulate the digestive system.

“The idea is that by creating intra-abdominal pressure through these blowing motions, you might encourage bowel movements,” Dr Thakuria explains.

While this might offer minor, temporary relief, it’s far from a scientifically validated solution for constipation. “Most constipation cases stem from lifestyle factors or underlying conditions that require targeted interventions,” he adds.

What else can help with constipation?

If you’re battling constipation, here are proven strategies recommended by Dr Thakuria:

1. Increase Fibre Intake

“Eating more fibre-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains helps bulk up the stool, making it easier to pass,” says Dr Thakuria. Fibre is essential for keeping the digestive system running smoothly.

2. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration is a common culprit behind hard stools. “Drinking enough water softens the stool and aids in easier bowel movements,” Dr Thakuria emphasises. Aim for 8–10 glasses daily or more, depending on your activity levels.

3. Physical Activity

“Exercise stimulates intestinal muscles,” says Dr Thakuria. Walking, jogging, or practicing yoga can significantly promote bowel regularity.

4. Try Warm Liquids

“Starting your morning with warm water or herbal teas can help kickstart your digestive system,” Dr Thakuria notes. This simple habit can be an effective remedy for mild constipation.

5. Abdominal Massage

Massaging the abdomen in a clockwise motion can help stimulate movement in the colon. “This is particularly helpful when combined with other methods, like warm drinks or gentle exercise,” suggests Dr Thakuria.

6. Use Probiotics

Probiotics, found in yogurt or kefir, support healthy gut bacteria. “They can improve digestion and regularity over time, particularly for those with recurring constipation,” Dr Thakuria explains.

7. Squatting Position

Adjusting your posture on the toilet to mimic a squatting position can align the colon for easier elimination. “Using a small stool to elevate your feet can make a noticeable difference,” he adds.

Hacks like blowing sounds may offer mild temporary relief, but chronic or severe constipation requires medical attention. “Persistent constipation can indicate underlying issues like irritable bowel syndrome, hypothyroidism, or even structural problems in the colon,” warns Dr Thakuria. Consulting a healthcare professional is crucial if dietary or lifestyle changes don’t bring relief.
