US President Donald Trump on Tuesday expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the growing death toll in Ukraine, stating that weekly casualties have surged to 7,000, a figure he called “unacceptable.”
“I’m not happy with Putin. I can tell you that much right now, because he’s killing a lot of people, and a lot of them are his soldiers, his soldiers and their soldiers mostly,” Trump told reporters. “And it’s now up to 7,000 a week.”
The president’s comments come amid renewed scrutiny over the direction of the Ukraine conflict, which has dragged on for more than three years. While Trump stopped short of announcing any new measures, he hinted at possible actions, saying, “I wouldn’t be telling you, we want to have a little surprise.”
Trump also acknowledged Ukraine’s military resilience, attributing part of their resistance to American support. “The Ukrainians were brave, but we gave them the best equipment ever made,” he said, pointing to ongoing US military aid as a key factor in Kyiv’s defence efforts.
