When we think of fruits that are eaten along with their peels, banana would probably be the last one to come to mind. Banana peels are the ones thrown away as soon as it’s cut. But if you are tired of mosquitoes biting you in the monsoon, you should hold back from throwing the peel right into the dustbin.

Yes, the banana peels are rich in anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce the redness and swelling caused by mosquito bites. The peel contains compounds like polysaccharides and antioxidants that soothe the skin and reduce irritation. Dr Sonali Kohli, Consultant – Dermatology at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, said, “When applied to a mosquito bite, the peel’s natural enzymes help to break down the proteins in the mosquito saliva that cause itching and inflammation.”

How to use

Dr Kohli recommends two methods by which banana peel can be used to soothe mosquito bites:

-Direct Application: Rubbing the inside of a banana peel directly on the mosquito bite. This provides immediate relief from itching and reduces swelling.

-Banana Peel Paste: Mash the banana peel and mix it with a few drops of glycerin or rose water. Apply this paste to the affected area and leave it on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off.

Moisturizing: The peel’s natural oils and antioxidants help to moisturize and nourish the skin. It can be used as a natural remedy for dry skin.

Acne Treatment: The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of banana peels can help reduce acne and prevent future breakouts. Applying the inside of the peel to the affected area can soothe inflammation and reduce redness.
