Gunshots were heard in the upper reaches of Shopian in South Kashmir Tuesday morning.
Senior police officials confirmed the presence of militants in the area and that in the contact, there was an exchange of fire between security forces and militants. However, with the operation ongoing, officials have refrained from divulging further details at this point.
This comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised counter strikes as a response to terror without differentiating between terrorists and the regime that sponsors them. The speech came in the aftermath of India’s strikes on terrorist sites in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan in the aftermath of the killing of 26 civilians in Pahalgam last month.
It also comes two weeks after a Hizbul Mujahideen militant’s brother, who officials said was a militant associate, was killed in an encounter in Bandipora district of Jammu & Kashmir.
