3 booked after woman injured in acid attack in Tripura’s Sepahijala

Hours after a woman came under acid attack at Sonamura NC Nagar in Tripura’s Sepahijala district, the police on Monday lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against three men, suspecting their involvement in the incident.

Officers identified the injured woman as Runa Begum, 26. Her husband works abroad. They have a child.

According to the Sepahijala police, three people believed to be residents of a nearby village allegedly threw acid at the woman when she stepped out of the house to relieve herself on Sunday night. Officers said she sustained burn injuries on her hand and legs, and was rushed to a local health centre from where she was later shifted to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala.

“We have registered a case against three people. No one has been arrested till now. As per our preliminary probe, it is suspected that the incident occurred due to previous enmity,” said a senior police officer in Sonamura.

In a similar incident, a man sustained severe burn injuries after his maternal aunt allegedly threw acid at him, suspecting him to be a thief at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district over two weeks ago. The police said two separate cases were registered in the wake of the incident: one against the man, Sushanta, 27, for entering the house late at night, and another against his maternal uncle and aunt.
