After laudatory speeches by President Trump, Buckeye coach Ryan Day and Vance, the vice president – who is an Ohio State graduate – tried to hoist the trophy by holding it in the air, unaware that the trophy’s golden top was designed to separate from its black base.
The US Marine Band was playing “We Are the Champions” when Vance, who earned a degree in Philosophy and Political Science in 2009 from Ohio, tried to lift the 3-foot championship trophy.

Vice President Vance fumbled the trophy and after struggling lost his grip on the two pieces as it eventually fell. OSU running back TreVeyon Henderson grabbed the top of the trophy which was football shaped, while the base fell to the ground.

However, Vance quickly picked up the trophy with an assist from Ohio State coach Ryan Day and thereafter posed with the gold brackets.
Some players surrounding the vice president winced. Pictures and videos went viral on the internet as Vance tried to explain the gaffe in a post on X, “I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it.”
